Science, Technology, and Human Values Essay -- Slaughterhouse-Five Ess
Science, Technology, and Human Values in Sigmund Freud's Civilization and Its Discontents, Henrik Ibsen and Arthur Miller's An Enemy of the People, and Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five Technology has advanced to the point where it touches our lives in nearly every conceivable way-we no longer have to lift a finger to perform the most trivial tasks. The wealth of information and science we have learned in the last few centuries have made our lives easier but not always better, especially when concerning civilization as a whole. Ibsen, Freud, and Vonnegut argue that human values have not kept pace with knowledge's unceasing expansion, which has become an anathema for the individual person and deleterious to society's delectation, albeit without people's entire comprehension. Henrik Ibsen, as adapted by Arthur Miller, uses his play An Enemy of the People to illustrate how one's contentedness is not necessarily aided by technology but in many instances in fact hindered. When the town's main industry, Kirsten Springs, becomes polluted it raises queries from Dr. Stockmann as to its hazardousness to its occupants. Nearly all residents of the little Norwegian city rally behind Aslaksen, the printer and leader of the business class, in destroying the doctor's credibility so that his accusations of the dangerous water will never be believed by tourists, which would result in a prodigious financial loss for all. This quaint town is a representation of humanity's tendencies towards egoism. When money is involved, it doesn't matter what the risk is, regardless of physical injuriousness and potential loss of life. The springs symbolize technology and Dr. Stockmann stands for venerable human values. The technology has become prosperous ... ...ges of technology outweigh the disadvantages to the collective human values of society. Science and Technology are not pursued to improve the moral values of man and as such will be perpetually in disagreement. Humanity will never cease to create new technologies and learn about the universe through scientific methods. A person's values on the other hand are not actively augmented and will suffer. Society is in need of a refreshing of ethics that stays on par with the development of man's other creations. Works Cited Freud, Sigmund. Civilization and Its Discontents. Ed. and Trans. Intellectual Property Rights Reaction Paper
For the first seminar that we have attended last February 27, 2013, I could say that Iââ¬â¢ve learned a lot based from what the speaker had discussed. Some of the topics based from what I can remember are copyrights and trademarks. I know that this topic will be very helpful especially for me because I am a Digital Arts student and I often create Graphic Design and Vector Artworks which I also post on the internet. And we all know that nowadays, most people on the internet donââ¬â¢t know how to ask permission whenever they use a certain picture so the rights of the owner is being is being violated. For the over all presentation of the seminar, I would rate it probably 7 because at some point I got bored on it probably because the speaker wasnââ¬â¢t that lively when he was discussing and I was hoping that at some point he would show us some video related to the topic. But again, the overall presentation was good and I can say that the group was ready enough because everything went well from the start until the end of the seminar. For the third seminar which was conducted by my group, I can say that what she had discussed was good enough. The topic was not just for women but also for LGBT and I believe that this seminar was really helpful and informative since our batch will now be having our internship and situations like what she had shown can possibly happen to us and our boss. Iââ¬â¢ve learned that whenever we are being harassed by someone, we should not be afraid to complain because it will also be for our own good.My most favorite part during the seminar was the showcasing of the video sheà have. She showed us different videos related to the topic and explained each one of them. Though this part was the one that consumed most of the time, I still learned a lot from it. At some point I also got bored because she was talking too slow. She even consumed the time which was supposed to be given for the second speaker but for the overall rate of the s eminar I can give our group a rate of 8 out of 10.For the fourth seminar which was held the same day with our group, I can say that I havenââ¬â¢t learned anything because there were just 30 minutes left before the end of time and while the speaker was discussing the introduction of the topic and showing some video clips, the electricity suddenly went off causing the seminar to be stopped. Though I donââ¬â¢t have any background about their topic I think it was really interesting. I was also interested hearing their speaker deliberate what was supposed to be said because some of my friends said that she was good and at the same she is also teaching Sociology in our school. All in all, my rating for the fourth group was 6 out of 10 since they werenââ¬â¢t able to finish it.

Multiple nations around the globe are also having difficulty finding a functioning price tag for a college degree. The history of tuition starts in 1862, when Congress passed the Morrill Act. The act established tuition-free land granted public universities. Tuition was free or almost free for most students who attended college, predominantly the rich and upper class elite. Eighty two years later the Servicemen s Readjustment Act of 1944 was passed allowing more than just the elite to get a college degree. The bill made it easier for veterans returning home from World War II to enroll in college (Sanchez 7). The Servicemenââ¬â¢s Readjustment Act opened the door of a college education to the masses of soldiers heading home, roughly eight million people took advantage of it, more than the writers of the intended to use it. States accepted the stream of students and provided for them during the post-war economy. The National Defense Student Loan was created next and opened up the same doors to everyone.
